Things to know on Election Day:

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Only registered voters can vote.

Election results will be posted on the city's Web site as soon as available on Election Night. Residents can also hear the results at City Hall, 31, S. Summit Ave. upstairs in the gallery.

All results are considered "unofficial" until all absentee ballots are counted and all polling places are certified Nov. 4 by the city's Board of Supervisors of Elections.

By the numbers:

Gaithersburg, which hosts non-partisan elections, has 20,898 registered voters.

There are six precincts voting in this year's election.

3,579 people voted in the 2007 city elections. That is 14.6 percent of registered voters.

The Gaithersburg mayor earns $12,500, while council members earn $10,000. The mayor's salary will increase to $18,500 per year immediately after the November city election and the City Council's salary will increase to $15,000 per year, as decided by the mayor and council on July 23, 2007.

More voter info:

Gaithersburg residents who are registered to vote in Montgomery County are registered to vote in the city election. Call the Montgomery County Board of Elections at 240-777-VOTE to confirm registration. The deadline to register was Oct. 5.

Voters are not required to give a reason for requesting an absentee ballot. Pick up an application at City Hall during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call to request one at 301-258-6310. Applications can be downloaded at the city's Web site, www.gaithersburgmd.gov.

Absentee ballots will be mailed after approval of the application. Residents who are approved for an absentee ballot after Oct. 31 must pick up their absentee ballot at City Hall.

Mail or drop of completed absentee ballots at City Hall, 31 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877 by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.

A sample ballot will be mailed to all registered voters in late October.
