In another unexpected move, Secretary of State John T. Willis (D) filed a last-minute bid to face incumbent state Comptroller William Donald Schaefer (D).

In the Montgomery County Council race, Steve Joseph (D) of Derwood abandoned an at-large bid to challenge incumbent Marilyn J. Praisner (D-Dist. 4) of Calverton. In the House of Delegates race, Del. Dana Lee Dembrow (D-Dist. 20) of Silver Spring has decided to run for re-election after weeks of weighing runs for state Senate or the House in District 14 where his residence had been redistricted. He now is registered to vote at his parents' address in Silver Spring, which is in District 20.
