The builders and developers in Frederick County are coughing up big money to help their candidates running for county commissioner.
Republican Mike Cady, who for the first time filed a campaign fund-raising report last week with the Frederick County Board of Elections, has raised $7,198. Nearly $1,200 of that is from the building and real estate community.
Contributors include HF Payne Construction Co., Morgan Keller, Inc., Admar Custom Homes, Kline Scott Visco Commercial Real Estate Inc., Kent Briddell Construction, Curtis L. Myers Construction Co. Inc., Cavalier Development Consultants and JSA Commercial Realty LCC.
One of Cady's Republican opponents, John Lovell, is also getting support from the builders and developers.
According to Lovell's first campaign fund-raising report, more than $3,000 of his contributions came from residents in his hometown of Jefferson. This time, though, it's the real estate and building community opening their wallets.
Some of the same names have emerged: Kline Scott Visco, Kent Briddell, Cavalier, Curtis L. Myers, and Admar. Lovell also got money from Mariner Homes, Dan Ryan Builders, Frall Developers and Sandhill Enterprises.
He continues to get financial support from Defenders of Citizens Rights Inc., a local landowners group of which he is a member.
Defenders' attorney Rand Weinberg has given $350, and former Frederick Alderman Blaine Young, also a member of Defenders, has contributed $100.
So far, Lovell boasts the largest campaign chest of the commission candidates, with $18,192.
He attributes his hefty contributions to his early entry into the race more than a year ago. Eventually 19 others joined him, but most of those waited until the July 1 deadline.
Charles Jenkins (R), who works for Ausherman Homes, is also getting money from his fellow builders. Of his $6,420 in funds, $480 came from construction or development firms.
Defenders member Thomas Henderson (R) collected an additional $1,940 from Aug. 7 through Aug. 28, bringing his total contributions to $5,196. Contributing to his campaign were: Dan Ryan Builders, Kent Briddell Construction Co., Forty West Builders, Morgan Keller Inc. and Admar.
Another newcomer, Republican Dwaine Robbins, also received some funds from Briddell and Curtis L. Myers Construction last month.
Robbins raised almost half -- $1,954 -- of his $3,985 since his last report was filed Aug. 13.
Several other candidates filed reports last week.
Running close behind Lovell in contributions is incumbent Jan Gardner (D). During the last filing report, Gardner raised $7,515. But during the period from Aug. 7 through Aug. 25, she increased her contributions by $5,375. Much of that is from a $4,000 contribution she received from her aunt and uncle, Frank and Sarah Salizzoni of Jupiter, Fla.
Gardner received the same amount from the Salizzonis during her 1998 campaign for commissioner.
Another Democrat, Richard M. Floyd, continues to be one of the top moneymakers. Floyd raised $2,501 last month, bringing his total to $13,191.
His contributors come from a wide range of residents, including two of his Democratic opponents, Gardner and George Smith.
Gardner has given $75 and Smith, $30.
Smith brought his total campaign funds to $11,560.
Other Democrats have been adding to their coffers. Fern Hines has collected $7,839. Aref Khatib stands at $5,485. Bonnie Bailey-Baker is close behind with $5,411.
Incumbent County Commissioner John "Lennie" Thompson (R) raised $641 last month, despite a pledge not to solicit contributions. Overall, he has $5,230 in his campaign.
Former County Commissioner Bruce Reeder (D) raised $665 last month, bringing his monetary support to $5,090.
Democrat Belinda Teague-Levy raised $895 last month, bringing her total to $2,650, and Republican Mark Sweadner has raised $1,024.
Republican Hugh Warner has neither raised nor spent money for his campaign, according to his recent financial report.
The remaining candidates -- Republicans Charlie Baker, Roger Kelly, Stephen Silvious and Democrat Karan Henley -- again filed affidavits with the Board of Elections stating they have collected less than $1,000.
