The All-School Booster Club at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda is holding a sale of "gently used" books, CDs, videos and games from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the school's conference center at 6400 Rock Spring Drive.
And any books left over from the sale will be donated to Books for Africa, a student-run group at George Washington University that is helping to stock a library in Nigeria.
Emily Narkis, 18, a Walter Johnson alum from Bethesda and now a freshman at George Washington, served as the link between the Boosters and Books for Africa. The university group has collected more than 30,000 books since its founding in 2002, Narkis said, and is working on another 20,000 just for the Nigerian library.
"For them to buy one new book and have it sent to Africa costs $10," she said, so "the equivalent value is $200,000."
Narkis will be making another stop when she comes back to Bethesda this weekend to pack up the unsold books at Walter Johnson, she said. She is also picking up leftovers from a used book sale earlier this month at Wyngate Elementary School.
For more information on the Walter Johnson sale or to make a donation, contact Molly Rehbehn at 240-888-3012 or books@graves.net. Donations also can be dropped off at the school office through Friday afternoon.
