This is my response to Leah Barrett's scurrilous lies and her attempts at the character assassinations of both Sen. John A. Giannetti Jr. (D-Dist. 21) of Laurel and me in her recent letter, "Giannetti 'showed his true colors'" [April 7]. I do respect some of the senator's courageous and enlightened votes regarding the constitutional rights of Maryland's firearms community, but I am hardly a fan of his past support of draconian gun-control laws currently on the books. By bringing up the controversial and rather humorous flier of pro-gun control politicians in fake German SS uniforms, Barrett has opened the door to yet another public debate regarding the historical relationship between gun control and totalitarian regimes.
That flier was a parody in the same vein of the musical "The Producers," which features goose-stepping soldiers in Nazi uniforms. Though some fascist-minded politicians hypocritically took offense and failed to appreciate the humor of that flier, all the major television and print media outlets considered it worthy of extensive news coverage at the time.
One does not have to be a constitutional scholar to become better educated regarding the well-established historical facts linking the mandatory licensing and registration of lawful firearms owners with eventual gun confiscation schemes, higher crime rates and genocide.
I candidly remind Barrett, her political allies and other enemies of freedom that even former President Bill Clinton has credited support of gun control as the most decisive issue that caused several Democrats to lose their seats and majority status across most of the nation beginning with the 1994 Republican takeover of Congress.
