Thousands of people attended the sixth annual Harlem Renaissance Festival Saturday at Kentland/Columbia Park Community Center.
Organizers considered the elebration, which celebrates the art, music and literature of the Harlem Renaissance, a great success, said Carolyn Mills-Matthews, a consultant with the Cammay Group, which helped put on the event.
"We didn't do a tally check, but we had more than last year, much more," she said of the attendance. She estimated between 4,000 and 6,000 people turned out.
Contributing to the success were the technological displays, the panel discussion comparing the works of the late poet Langston Hughes and the late rapper Tupac Shakur, and the county schools system, Mills-Matthews said.
Students performed, participated in the art display and schools volunteers helped out throughout the event, she said.
Hip-hop artist Doug E. Fresh headlined the entertainment. Local talent included Groove Stu, Reminsce, jazz singers Ehrael Rivers and Indigo, spoken word artists Komplex and 5th Element and dance troupes Colours and Expressions.
