Congratulations to Robin Galicic of Point of Rocks, who has recently joined of the Arthritis Foundation's Western Maryland region as the executive director.

Galicic has an extensive background in the telecommunications industry in technical sales and business management, according to a press release.

The Arthritis Foundation is located in Frederick at 22 S. Market St.

Buckeystown native graduates magna cum laude

Congratulations to Keith Robert Krause Jr. of Buckeystown, who last month graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University and earned a bachelor's degree from the School of Foreign Service.

An Urbana High School graduate, Krause was one of 1,709 undergraduate students in Georgetown's Class of 2005.

Hood honors local students

Hood College recognized several local students for academic excellence at the annual honors convocation last month at the college.

Christina L. Bariatti of Myersville was awarded the Mary Ellen Randolph Prize, named in honor of Hood Associate Professor Emerita Randolph, who lives in Frederick and is active in the Hood community. The award is presented annually to an art major demonstrating equal proficiency in and enthusiasm for art history and the studio arts. Bariatti, a junior, is majoring in studio arts with a concentration in photography.

Jocelyn S. Berté of Middletown was awarded the Martha Briney Honor Scholarship, established in honor of the late Professor Briney. The award is given annually to underclassmen who excel in English literature courses. Berté, who graduated in May, was an English major with a minor in cello performance. She plans to continue studying English literature in graduate school.

Christine B. Conyers of Middletown is the recipient of an honorable mention for the Janice E. Cole Writing Prize. The prize, established in 1992 by the humanities faculty of Hood College, is awarded annually to students who submit the most outstanding essay written for a course in the humanities. The prize is named in honor of the late Professor Cole, who taught English at Hood for 31 years. Conyers, a senior, received the award for a historical and philosophical analysis entitled "An Eye for an Eye Leaves Everyone Blind: Jury Nullification in the Criminal Justice System." She plans to graduate in May 2006 with a double major in archaeology and law and society. She is also working on a paralegal degree at Frederick Community College.

Sharon L. Cramer of Middletown was awarded the Raymond L. and Louise K. Gillard prize, endowed by Gary Gillard, assistant professor of information technology, in memory of his parents. Cramer, who graduated in May, majored in computer science.

The Gazette will list the names of award recipients from Brunswick, Adamstown and Point of Rocks next week in this column.

Children's events scheduled

The Brunswick and Middletown public libraries will host several children's events this week.

In Brunswick, a storytelling event for children called The Safari Saturday Storytime, for ages 3 to 8, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the library, 915 N. Maple Ave.

Clifford the Big Red Dog will visit children of all ages at the Brunswick library at 10:30 a.m., June 30.

Clifford will visit the Middletown Branch Library at 11 a.m., Saturday, to tell stories and demonstrate origami craft. Bring your camera to the library, at 101 Prospect St.

At 11 a.m., Wednesday, the Middletown library will also hold a sidewalk art activity for children of all ages. Registration is required.
