Montgomery County Commuter Services Helps Businesses, Employees, and Residents Go Green AND Save Green Through Better Ways To Work!

These days everyone is trying to be "greener." Through its Better Ways To Work! programs, Montgomery County Commuter Services helps businesses, employees, residents and others traveling around the metro area shrink their environmental and economic footprint.

Help for commuters! Innovative programs and information help commuters find greener alternatives to driving alone, including transit, carpools, vanpools, telework, alternative work schedules, bicycling and walking.

Help for employers! Take advantage of onsite employer consultations, commuting programs for employees, transit and ridesharing information, and transit subsidy programs. Many employers can cut costs while improving employee benefits using approaches that Commuter Services can help implement.

Help for the community! The use of alternatives to the single-occupant vehicle helps address traffic congestion, reduces impacts on the environment, improves the healthfulness of our air, and enhances our quality of life. Everyone in the community benefits when you utilize these services!

Programs and Services

  • Transit Subsidy Programs - FareShare and Super FareShare programs match an employer's contribution toward an employee's monthly transit or vanpool cost.
  • Onsite Employee Information - Commuter Services' commuting consultants will visit your worksite to promote commuting alternatives and answer employees' questions about specific commuting needs. They will provide schedules for Ride On, Metrobus and Metrorail, and information on carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking and a host of other options.
  • Regional RideshareMatching - The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) regional ride-matching database contains the names of commuters who want to share their ride to work in a car or van. Commuter Services coordinates with COG to provide carpool and vanpool matching.
  • Guaranteed Ride Home -In case of an emergency, illness or unscheduled overtime, employees who use alternative transportation get a free ride.
  • TRiPS Commuter Stores - Commuter Services operates a commuter store in Silver Spring and will be opening another in Friendship Heights, early in 2009. Transit fare media, including passes for Ride On and Metrobus; SmarTrip Cards; Metrorail farecards; and transit-related merchandise are available. TRiPS' helpful staff also provides transit maps, Ride On and Metrobus schedules, bike and pedestrian maps, and customized trip planning.
  • Telework Programs - Free your employees from the gridlock of the daily commute by setting up a productive telework program. Experienced consultants specializing in telework programs are available at no cost to employers.
  • Alternative Work Schedules- Flextime and alternative work schedules let employees avoid congestion during peak hours. Consider a flexible approach to scheduling that allows for earlier or later arrival and departure times.
