Whether it is because of straitened finances or reduced staff, local libraries seem to have been reduced to computer terminals, business offices for a select few and temporary sleeping headquarters. For those who are looking for the daily newspapers and up-to-date issues of magazines, it has become a fruitless endeavor.
Perhaps as an octogenarian, I am unwilling to accept completely the Internet revolution, still adhering to the time-honored traditions of a library that does not serve as an office space, a computer terminal, a cell phone paradise or a social gathering arena.
Perhaps money is short, but it is time to define the purpose of the library and hopefully that would be to provide all age groups with a learning and intellectual experience.
