for awards
The Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County is seeking nominations for its Mary C. Jackson "Good Works, Done Well" Award that is given to an employee or volunteer at a nonprofit agency who is committed to helping the disadvantaged. An additional award will be given this year to an agency or organization that has sought to improve the lives and health care of low-income, uninsured county residents.
The awards will be presented Dec. 3 at the coalition's annual meeting.
Nominations should be no longer than one page and must be submitted by Nov. 19. Elected officials are not eligible and self-nominations will not be considered.

IT deal from HUD
DB Consulting Group of Silver Spring has won a five-year contract to support the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Neighborhood Networks Initiative. The contract is worth up to $36 million.
Created in 1995, Neighborhood Networks, with 1,500 program centers, promotes self-sufficiency and providing technology access to residents in Federal Housing Administration-insured and -assisted communities.
DB consulting, with subcontractor and team member Lockheed Martin Corp. of Bethesda, will provide IT services, including maintaining and developing the program's Web site and databases.

to train visually impaired, blind veterans
Workforce One Maryland, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Division of Workforce Development awarded Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind $100, 000 to support its new initiative, "Workforce Development Program for Visually Impaired and Blind Veterans in BRAC-Impacted Regions in Maryland."
The effort will address the needs of all returning soldiers and veterans who are or have become visually impaired or blind in the Washington, D.C., area and at the BRAC-impacted military installations, including Walter Reed, NNMC, Andrews, Pax River and Ft. Belvoir.
Currently, the estimated number of veterans who are visually impaired and blind in Baltimore, Washington and Martinsburg is 4,600. The $100,000 will be spent to provide assistance to the veterans who are visually impaired and blind seeking employment. Columbia Lighthouse will work with each veteran to provide workforce development training to ensure that they are job-ready for either military positions or positions outside of the military.

Silver Spring man named Fellow of Marine Technology Society
Silver Spring resident Dr. Richard W. Spinrad, assistant administrator for research at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration in Silver Spring, was honored with the title of Fellow of the Marine Technology Society during the society's annual awards luncheon in September.
