Kenneth Harold McGrew, 85, of Woodsboro, died Oct. 20, 2009 at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Walkersville, after an extended illness. He was the husband of Vivian H. McGrew, his beloved wife of 65 years.
Born Oct. 12, 1924 in Fairpoint, Ohio, he was the son of the late Pinkney Ellis and Etta Mae Hepner McGrew, and was preceded in death by his brother Harry Ellis McGrew and sister, Dorothy McGrew Jack.
Mr. McGrew was a member of Walkersville United Methodist Church. Before moving to Woodsboro he was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Gaithersburg, where he received his 40-year attendance pin in the men's fellowship class. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country during World War II, seeing action in Europe under General Patton. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the EAMETO Ribbon with Silver and Bronze Battle Stars and a Presidential Citation.
He was a member of American Legion Post 0297, Rockville; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Military Order of the Purple Heart, Westminster; Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and Disabled American Veterans. After his military discharge, Mr. McGrew and his wife Vivian owned and operated several grocery stores in Annandale, Va., Rockville and Travilah, Md. He received his real estate license in 1954 and broker's license in 1956 and was owner of Ken McGrew Real Estate, selling real estate and insurance for over 30 years in Rockville, Gaithersburg and Frederick. He was also a top producer for Century 21 Real Estate in Frederick, receiving numerous awards.
In addition to his wife, Vivian, he is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Noffsinger and husband Tom of Deltaville, Va., and Sharon Lee McGrew of Woodsboro; four grandchildren, Tom Noffsinger, Jr. and wife Amy; Tracy Conder and husband Kevin; Amon Eddy Esworthy III; and Renee McGrew Mills and husband Josh; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
A funeral service was held Oct. 24 at Walkersville United Methodist Church. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
