The Maryland Concert Opera will begin its fourth season with "The Best of Bel Canto" at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace UCC Church, 25 E. Second St., Frederick.
The concert will feature arias, ensembles, and choral numbers from such Bel Canto favorites as Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore," "Don Pasquale," and "Lucia di Lammermoor," as well as Bellini's "La Sonnambula" and "Norma" and Rossini's "The Barber of Seville."
Joining the roster this season is soprano Jennifer Holbrook. Jeffrey Tarr, bass, last heard as Osmin in "Abduction from the Seraglio" several seasons ago, will also make a return appearance.
The Maryland Concert Opera will be joined by the Choral Arts Society of Frederick, directed by Lynn Staininger, and will all be accompanied by artistic director, Noel Lester, at the piano.
The Maryland Concert Opera is dedicated to bringing quality operatic music, in concert form, to the Frederick Community and to raising funds for Grace Church's ministries to the hungry and homeless.
To date, the group has raised nearly $5,000 for the Soup Kitchen, Advocates for Homeless Families, the Linton Cold Weather Shelter, and various other local charities.
This season, the Maryland Concert Opera will be mounting "Opera Goes to the Movies" in May and will host a masterclass for young singers in the spring. The group will also award several vocal scholarships to young singers in the Frederick area.
Tickets are $20 general admission and $10 for students and seniors.
