Glenn Dale nonprofit gets grant to benefit cancer patients
All Shades of Pink Inc., a Glenn Dale-based nonprofit organization that assists women and their families diagnosed with breast cancer with resource referrals, nonmedical advice and/or emergency financial assistance during their treatment period, received a $1,500 grant Oct. 16 from the Wal-Mart Foundation in recognition of ASOP's efforts in helping families fight breast cancer.
Denice Whalen-White, founder and president of ASOP, said the nonprofit will allocate specific percentages of the grant to buy yarn and have volunteers make blankets for the Comfort Blanket program, help fund the utility assistance program and make available a coloring book free of charge to breast cancer patients with young children.

The "Meet the Lenders Day" half-day financial advice event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 12 at 3400 Pennsy Drive in Landover. Lanham hospital announces visitor policy change
Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham recently changed its visitor policy to better protect patients and visitors during flu season.
Visitors with runny noses, a cough and/or fever higher than 100 degrees will not be allowed to enter patient rooms. Also, visiting hours are restricted from noon to 8 p.m., and visitors under 18 aren't permitted in patient rooms except for a family member in an end-of-life situation.
These policies are subject to change as the hospital continues to monitor the flu. Visitors are encouraged to cover their nose or mouth with a tissue or inside of their elbow when sneezing or coughing and to wash their hands frequently.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Beverly M. Parks, a 2009 graduate of Charles Flowers High School in Springdale and the daughter of Stewart Parks of Glenn Dale, recently completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Parks completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate's degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.
Air National Guard Airman Dominique E. Comer also recently completed the eight-week training at Lackland. Comer is a 2009 graduate of DuVal High School in Lanham, and her aunts are Calaura Christian of Lanham and Nathlon Jackson of Brandywine.
Army Reserve Pvt. Terrell Epps recently graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.
During the nine-week program, Epps studied the Army's mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history and core values and traditions, among other things.
Epps is the son of Robin Hickerson of Lanham, a 2008 graduate of DuVal High.

Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham is holding a class about nutrition, diabetes treatment and research from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Joslin Diabetes Center on the fifth floor of the Medical Office Building at Doctors Community Hospital at 8118 Good Luck Road in Lanham.
The class also helps participants manage challenges, set goals and develop personal action plans.

Moms group holding home business extravaganza
The Northern Prince George's County Chapter of Mocha Moms Inc., a national organization that serves as a support group for stay-at-home mothers of color who choose not to work full-time outside of the home in order to devote more time to their families, is hosting its fifth annual Home Business Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at Perrywood Elementary School at 501 Watkins Park Drive in Upper Marlboro.
The event is designed to help moms considering working at home and support those who have already begun. Several home-based business owners will be available to discuss what they're doing from home, explain why it works for them and sell their services and products.

Hospital's sleep center hosts sleep apnea support group
The Sleep Center at Doctors Community Hospital will hold an Alert, Well And Keeping Energetic, or AWAKE, support group meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at Doctors Community Hospital's Ambulatory Surgery Building, fifth floor at 8118 Good Luck Road in Lanham.
The support group is designed to increase patients' understanding of sleep apnea, a common but usually chronic condition characterized by at least one pause in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep, and help them find new ways to manage the lifestyle changes that come with treatment.
The group will focus on patient-centered, interactive discussions, giving patients the opportunity to share their experiences with their sleep apnea diagnosis, treatment and coping strategies.
