While Republicans nationally gloated over Election Day gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey, Democrats in Maryland took solace in some local wins in places such as Annapolis and Frederick.
"It was a disappointing night in Virginia and New Jersey," said Gov. Martin O'Malley (D). "It was a pretty solid night in Maryland from a Democratic perspective." He cited victories in Annapolis and Frederick.
Joshua J. Cohen (D) is the likely new mayor of Annapolis, according to unofficial results. Mayor Ellen O. Moyer (D) was limited to two terms in office.
Democrats also won seats on the Annapolis City Council and the Frederick Board of Aldermen and in other locales.
Meanwhile, Republican Randy McClement won Frederick's mayoral seat over Democrat Jason Judd, according to unofficial results.
Absentee and provisional ballots still were being counted Thursday in most races, but some results include:
-Incumbents swept to victory in Bowie's nonpartisan elections, with Mayor G. Frederick Robinson and three sitting City Council members one from District 2 and two at-large defeating challengers. Robinson won another two-year term over Samuel R. Graham. Incumbent Councilman Dennis Brady and Councilwomen Geraldine Valentino-Smith and Diane M. Polangin also kept their seats.
-Greenbelt elected its first black City Councilman, Emmett V. Jordan, who received the second-most votes, making him mayor pro tem. Mayor Judith F. Davis received the most votes, securing her re-election. The elections are nonpartisan, but Jordan said he is active in the local Democratic club. While he said much was made of his race, he believes it was not the main reason for his election.
"It's not so much that I'm an African American. I really ran on my credentials," he said.
-Rockville City Councilwoman Phyllis R. Marcuccio ousted Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann in the city's nonpartisan election.
-Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz won re-election over challenger Richard Koch. Two incumbent council members, Henry F. Marraffa Jr. and Michael A. Sesma, also were re-elected.
-Frederick residents elected an entirely new Board of Aldermen, giving four Democrats and one Republican top votes and ousting all three incumbents who were up for re-election Tuesday. Top vote-getters were Karen Lewis Young (D), Michael O'Connor (D), Shelley Aloi (R), Carol Krimm (D) and Kelly Russell (D).
-Takoma Park Mayor Bruce Williams won re-election, as did City Council incumbent Terry J. Seamens. Frederick Schultz was elected to the Ward 6 council position, which will be vacated by current Councilwoman Donna Victoria.
-Former College Park City Councilman Andrew M. Fellows was elected mayor in an uncontested race, replacing current four-term Mayor Stephen A. Brayman, who chose not to seek a fifth term.
