The Eleanor Roosevelt High School girls' soccer team earned the right to face Bowie High in the 4A South Region final after disposing of visiting Parkdale, 4-0, in a regional semifinal on Friday afternoon at Roosevelt High School.
The Raiders (11-1) will meet Bowie at 7 p.m. Tuesday at High Point High School in Beltsville, with the winner advancing to the state semifinals. It is the seventh consecutive season that the 4A South Region girls' soccer final will match Bowie and Roosevelt. The Bulldogs beat Roosevelt, 2-1, in a regular season meeting on Oct. 6.
Roosevelt junior Camille Richman scored three goals and forward Amira Walcott added another. Defending region champion Bowie (13-1) had little trouble with Henry A. Wise in an 11-0 victory in the other region semifinal.
Richman scored her first goal midway through the first half when she took a centering pass from senior Janice Johnson, pivoted left and drilled a low, left-footed shot into the right corner of the net.
Walcott gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead five minutes later on a low shot from the right side of the box. Midway through the second half, Richman notched her second goal to give the Raiders a comfortable 3-0 lead. With seven minutes remaining, she completed her hat trick on an assist from sophomore Becky Sowers.
"We just did a nice job of passing the ball," Richman said. "We took a lot of good shots and we stayed really focused the whole game. We're looking forward to playing Bowie on Tuesday. We have to stay focused on us and not think about them."
Parkdale senior Zulia Menjivar played in the final game of her high school career on Friday and was the last player to leave the field. Menjivar, the Panthers' top scorer, was held without a shot on Friday and concluded her career with 65 goals, including 15 this year. With her parents waiting for her in the parking lot of the Greenbelt school, Menjivar said she found it difficult to leave. Parkdale ended its season at 6-8-1.
"It was a hard game," Menjivar said. "It was frustrating. We didn't get to take many shots. I'm sad that it's over. I didn't want it to end. We really improved this year. We tied Oxon Hill [3-3] and we beat Laurel and Flowers in the playoffs. This is the farthest that we've ever gone. It's just sad that it's over."
